Explain the methods you used to attract your audience in your AS coursework
In planning our coursework we had to consider these key areas, Mise-En-Scene, sound, camera and editing. However we also had to consider who our film would appeal to. To figure this out we looked for the typical age ranges that looked at trailers on YouTube and those age ranges who had reviewed the films on different websites. This allowed us to come to the conclusion that we should aim our film at 18-30 year olds. Also as a group we had thought of aiming towards university students as we knew this audience would enjoy high uses of editing techniques and camera work.
To add to this in our thriller opening we were planning on putting in black and white while only highlighting specific colours such as red. We thought this added a suspicious effect to our film. However this became impossible as we used more hand held camera work to aid the realism effect that we wanted. In doing this we were unable to highlight our specific colour which halted our plans, instead of this we increased and decreased the brightness in our scenes to add a binary opposite feel to the film such as good versus evil.
We also decided to increase our Mise en scene involvement to balance our lack of editing. In this we used realistic settings while keeping the clothing of our characters modern. In our killer scene we made sure that the body on the table was covered in fake blood, we did this to give the impression of violence as well as draw attention to the fact that this is our 'evil' character. This in addition attracted our male orientated audience. With our use of sound we went for a high tempo, adrenaline soundtrack we thought this would attract to our young and male orientated audience while also giving the sense of time going quickly which is related to the mind of the killer.
With having a male orientated film we had to pull in our audience with realism. We found out through our research that our niche audience would be attracted more by realism than by flashy editing techniques. This also allowed us to focus on specific areas without having to worry about a mass market.
However with our film there were a few things we could of improved and put in. With the lack of our much wanted black and white editing technique I feel we lost out on an effect. This could of been remedied by more planning and research our technique and how we would need the camera to be. Also in our research and planning we could of done this more thoroughly by surveying more people as well as our key male age range. Also I feel that we did do a lot of researching in many more areas such as editing and due to time restrictions we lost out on using these key features.
