Music Video Ideas

 Video Ideas

As we are doing a video for an Indie Rock band I feel that we must use the convention of narrative and performance which is seen in many Indie rock videos.
I also feel that with our lyrics we need set a general feeling or mood where key lines will play a part in the visual associated with the song. Therefore we need to have the lyrics pay a key part in our video. This is seen in many videos such as Daughtry - No surprise

This video also conforms to the convention of narrative and performance. Where the visuals are easily linked to the lyrics. The visuals also follow a linked narrative where the actors involved are all linked together as they are all looking to get out of something and that they are glad to be out,

"It's no surprise.. I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed 'til today (stayed 'til today)
Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise"

Also even though the lyrics are linked with the visuals, the cords and the actual song link in with the video also. When there is a loud, band performance the video cuts to the band members playing their instruments. This is shown at 00:45. This is used to show the audience that the band are focused and good at playing their instruments while allowing their audience to relate to them and to idealise their 'favourite member". I believe these conventions to be a key part of what we should look to do in our video. Even though this video is from the rock genre I believe these features to conform to what our thoughts are on our video. Also the rock genre are focused on the performance and showing that they can play their instruments and as this song is 'less rocky' I believe it to apply relevantly to our artist and this feature is a key to what the audience want to see from their artist.

Digipack Ideas

 Digipack Ideas

The album title for our band is 'A Long Walk Home'. The connotations of this title I feel is quite vast so we can have many options. However I feel as this title as well as our song connotate sadness I think may be a theme we will use.

This album cover from the Rock band Daughtry I feel is a good example of what we are looking for. This is because it shows all of the band members at the top of the cover showing that they might not be very well known so they have to show their faces to show their audience who they are. Also they are pictured above a road which may show them as powerful and good musicians or connotating that they are up in Heaven showing sadness of death. Also they are faded out showing their audience that they focus on the music rather than themselves and their appearance.

I feel that these two images show the title to mean that the band are on their way home but they have a long way ahead of them. Showing that they may have to impress or become better artists to make their way home. Also the black and white feel may allow us to work with some effects so that we can make a iconographic image which is directly linked to the artist. Also black and white gives an old fashioned theme to the album which is a convention of Indie Rock.

This image here shows the band names '28 North' on the side of the image on a guitar case. This could allow use to show to the audience that the artist is focused on their musical talents rather than anything else and that they are hidden away, possible being away from the mainstream. Also I feel that using this image as an inlay could be a special feature of our digipack as it shows that the audience are part of the visuals of the band and that is what they focus on

Another image from the Rock band Daughtry is of their CD cover which will be a part of our digipack. I think the use of the same image as the front cover for the CD cover is a good idea. This allows for effects to be put onto the same image by giving the image different connotations such as dark, gloomy or even allowing the artist to show a new idea or showing another convention of Indie Rock in the same image.

Audience Understanding

 Audience Understanding

  • Audience Engagement - How an audience interacts with a media text
  • Audience Expectations - These are the advance ideas an audience may have about a text
  • Audience Foreknowledge - Definite information the audience brings to a media product
  • Audience Identification - Way in which the audience feel themselves connected to a particular media text which directly expresses their attitude or lifestyle
  • Audience Placement - Range of strategies media producers used to directly target a particular audience
  • Audience Research - Audience research on all stages such as production, lifestyle and genre

Denis McQuail argues that the audiences consume their media texts for a variety of reasons:
  • Surveillance
  • Personal identity
  • Personal relationships
  • Escapism / Diversion

Applying music video theory - Roland Barthes

     Roland Barthes Theory

Roland Barthes - There are 5 different codes by which a narrative engages the attention of the audience

    • The enigma code - The audience is intrigued by the need to solve a problem
    • The action code - The audience is excited by the need to resolve a problem
    • The semantic code - The audience is directed towards an additional meaning by way of connotations
    • The symbolic code - The audience assumes that a character dressed in black is evil or menacing
    • The cultural code - The audience derives meaning in a text from shared cultural knowledge

Applying music video theory - Andrew Goodwin

     Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin - Relationship between lyrics and visuals.

    Is the narrative:
    •  Illustrative - Images provide a literal representation
    • Amplifying - Repetition of key meanings and effects to manipulate the audience
    • Contradicting - Images contrast the music
    • Disjuncture - When the meaning of the song is completely ignored

Applying Music video theory - Firth

    Firth 1988 Theory:

States that there are three broad characteristics of a music video.
    • Performance - Conveys a sense of a live performance e.g. a concert.
    • Narrative - Love stories are the most popular, action in the story is dominated by males who do things for females.
    • Conceptual - Metaphors to create a mood, offer multiple meanings.
These types form the content that is selected by the artist and music video director to convey a message as well as attract viewers either new or present.

    Digipack Ideas

    Digipack Ideas

As seen in my analysis of the Kooks album Inside in/ Inside out, I believe that using a monochrome background will be able to show the simplicity of our band as well as allowing us to focus on the denotations of our image such as showing our band playing their instruments or on a live performance. As we know from our research that this is what the Indie genre want to see.

Additionally I feel that we need to focus on the connotations of our bands name, '28 North' and the album title 'A long walk home' as these play an important role in how we can appeal to our target audience. I think that one of our shots for either our front of back cover should consist of a performance like image such as our band members standing holding or playing their instruments also I feel it one of the covers should hold an image that is incorporated into the title 'A long walk home'. This could either be our band walking alongside of dark, unlighted walkway or a lonely road where the audience can see that the image plays in with the title.

    Indie rock digipack analysis

The Kooks- Inside in/ Inside out Analysis

On the front cover of the digipack there are three clear colours that are used red, black and white. The red and black words contrast each other which makes the band name as well as the artist name stand out from the monochrome background. This is also used to draw the attention of the bands target audience.

The font is quite simple like the rest of the digipack suggesting that the band are simplistic and that they are appealing to their target audience through being an authentic Indie band. Also as all of the band's sight lines are significantly away from the camera this adds to the simplistic attitude of the band while showing they are not there to looking sexy or cool but just to be themselves which again appeals to the Indie audience. The simplicity attitude is shown throughout the digipack making it clear and consistent that the band are focused on being themselves and playing their instruments which is a key convention of the Indie/ Rock genre. Again this simplicity allows the audience to focus on the important things on the album cover such as the album name, band name and the band themselves.

Indie conventions are also shown through the bands clothing such as their skinny jeans and their long hair. Also the image of them playing their guitars is another part of the indie genre as their audience want to be shown that their artist can play an instrument so that they can aspire to be as good as them. Also as they are altogether this shows that the band are a team and that they do not work alone.

The monochrome that was on the front cover is shown on the back cover again showing simplicity and consistency. Also this time the band are shown from another perspective, through a POV shot. This allows the audience to see what the band see's and to image that they are part of the band. This is used to heighten the audience involvement in the band as well as their fascination. This also gives the audience a sight line of the band which could be seen as an exclusive insight into how the band make their music. This allows the audience to relate to the band and their performance.

The track listings are shown simple on the left hand side again showing the attitude of simplicity. Also the font from the front and back cover are the same this shows the bands connection with their music and showing their audience that they are doing it themselves and they have no gimmick.
A convention of most album covers is the barcode, record label and the details of copyright. Showing the legality of the album.

The CD cover is much more colourful than the rest of the digipack showing that even though they are simple they can also appeal to the energetic colour parts of the Indie genre. The colours also allow the CD to stand out from the rest of the album attracting its buyers attention.

Here is a list of monochromes and palettes. I feel that the use of monochromes and palettes would be a useful touch to our digipack as this will allow our digipack to show the conventions of an Indie bands digipack.

    Audience Research

     Audience Research

Looking at Indie videos on youtube I have found that the age of our target audience is 13-34 and they are both male and female

Here we can see two comments made on YouTube on a video of an Indie Rock band. The second comment we found the most interesting due to the fact that it states that a possible Indie Rock fan plays a guitar and/or is in a band. This applies and emphasises our hypthesis that that our typical audience for Indie Rock either play an instruement or are in a band. Additionally with the user saying that this is addictive to play on guitar it encourages a discussion with other fans of Indie Rock.

Additionally the first comment states that the only reason they are viewing the video was due to publication by MGMT. This could indicate that Indie Rock fans are interested in reading MGMT due to its Indie vibe.
    http://www.whoismgmt.com/us/home

    Our song

The song we are going to use is called Call Me Up by 28 North,

it is in the Alternative rock genre. I found the song while searching for unsigned artists, I went to their website 'http://www.28north.com/' where I found the contact details for their manager Jerry Heller. I then e-mailed him asking for permission to use the song, and he agreed so long a certain requirements were met, such as keeping the name of the band the same and full recognition was given to the artist.

    Audience Research

    Interviews:

Today Benji interviewed two different indie rock fans. From these interviews I hope to recieve to information that can be helpful in creating our music video. Both people being interviewed prefered not to be filmed however I took a photo of both the scripts. Here is how the scripts went.

    Name: Jeremiah
    Sex: Male
    Age: 15
Me: What type of clothes do you wear?
Jel: Checked shirts, skinny chinos and skinny jeans, sometimes a hat, polos,
Me: Do you see indie rock artists as icons and role models?
Jel: I like to wear similar clothes to them, and try to follow a similar fashion to them, however I dont believe the whole persona of the artists are iconic.
Me: What appeals to you in the indie/rock genre?
Jel: Guitar playing is a huge aspect of it, along with the unusual types of imagery presented.
Me: Do you enjoy guitar solos?
Jel: yes, prefer ryths in music, a constant beat to the song,
Me: What do you expect to see an artist wearing in a video?
Jel: Skinny jeans, boots, sometimes something that challenges fashion.
Me: Do you go to gigs on a regular basis?
    Jel: No
Me: When was the last gig you went to?
Jel: May (4months ago), glasvegas, indie rock band in London, however go to glastonbury every year.
Me: In indie rock music videos what do you expect to see?
Jel: Guitar solos, a lot of action, things happening through out the performance that involve the artist
Me: Why do you expect to see these?
Jel: because I know what the genre conventions are like and most artists stick to them in their videos.

From this interview we are able to recieve an idea of what indie rock fans look for in music videos, also what the typical conventions are of the videos. This interview is helpful to us as it gives us an idea of what we should feature in our video.

    Name: Amy
    Sex: Female
    Age: 25
Me: What type of clothes do you wear?
Amy: In fashion clothing! Check the magazines, look up to role models,
Me: Is any of your fashion based around indie Rock?
Amy: Female indie rock artists usually dress quite punky, I wear skinny jeans however do not dress specifically like the artists.
Me: Do you see indie rock artists as icons and role models?
Amy: I dont base my fashion around them as much as boys maybe do, I feel as though I like the lifestyle they live, however I dont look up to them as role models.
Me: What appeals to you in the indie/rock genre?
Amy: I really like the genre as a whole, I like the combination of all the conventions, I also like the way the genre is sometimes challenged in different ways.
Me: What do you mean 'challenge the conventions of the genre'?
Amy: sometimes artists experiment in their videos by exploring different video techniques, I like the way artists dress up differently, and the videos are usually wacky and fictional. But also have a serious side to them within the music.
Me: What do you expect to see an artist wearing in a video?
Amy: Sometimes you see artists just wearing typical clothing such as skinny jeans however more commonly these days artists seem to wear almost fancy dress outfits. This helps draw me into the video.
Me: Do you go to gigs on a regular basis?
Amy: yes I try go once a week on wednesday indie nights in a bar local to me, however I go at least twice a month without fail.
Me: In indie rock music videos what do you expect to see?
Amy: I expect to see classic elements of indie and rock such as drumming and guitar scenes however I also like to see a twist in a video.

I decided to interview a female to get a different point of view. With this interview I find out that indie rock videos can challenge the conventions of the genre. Also maybe fans like to see this genre challenged.

    Song Research Continued

    Song Research Continued

In looking for songs to use for our music video we have found a few good artists from two main sites, Newgrounds.com and Unsigned.com. Our main focus has been Unsigned.com as these feature more well made tracks as well as it was our most recent find.

In trying to find songs we have found a Soul artist on Unsigned.com who has produced four good songs, one of our favourites is 'Mi Latina' due to its good visually expressive lyrics as well as it being well produced and of good quality. http://www.unsigned.com/1solosoulrbartist.

Additionally to this artist we have found an Indie rock artists called 28 North. We have found that our favourite song to make into our music video is 'Call me up'. This song I believe will be a good choice for a music video as when listening to it as a group we came up with many suggestions for what we could do in our music video.

Audience Research - Indie - Youtube

Audience Research - Indie - Youtube

Artic Monkeys are a classic example of an indie rock band, I chose to look at the statistics on youtube, as over 19 million people had viewed it. The statistics have shown me that the artic monkeys are most popular with the younger generation. However this does not mean that all indie rock bands are prefered by the younger generation I will research into other indie rock bands.
    Below are the statistics.

    Audience Research - Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B - Youtube

    Audience Research - Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B - Youtube

    Hypothesis:
I believe that the type of audience that will listen to and watch Hip-Hop, Rap and R&B will be mostly males with some females ranging from 10-35. I believe that the audience will hold Foreknowledge about the artists and the genre. The audience may know about the artists lifestyle and previous lifestyle as well as more personal information as they are interests in the artist. Additionally the audience may research their favourite artists to gain an insight into their personal life as well as learning more about the artist.

The audience will expect the artists videos and lyrics to hold the key conventions of the genre while relating to the audience. It is seen in many Hip-Hop and Rap songs that the lyrics relate to its target audience of possible low class, who are attracted by the urban culture. This is because the artist can relate to its audience as they rap about the same kind of situations.

    Song Research

    Song Research

In trying to choose our desired song for our final piece we have come across some obstacles. We have found it difficult to settle on one set genre as we all believe different ideas will work. However we have managed to decide on Hip-Hop/Soul and the Indie genre. We have chosen these due to our interest in these genres as well as believing that we will find these genres easier to create a music video for the metal and the rock genre. Also as we are interested in these genres we will be able to find key examples that show the genre conventions as well as adapting this to our own tastes and ideas.

Another obstacle has been locating our desired music. We have found two great websites for royalty free music these are http://www.newgrounds.com/ and http://www.unsigned.com. However there are many different types of added genres when you search for a genre. Also there are many songs which we feel would be unsuitable and very difficult to pull off a good music video. Additionally when I have been looking for a song the song itself may be good however it is sometimes poor quality which could ruin our video itself. Furthermore as many of these artists have no production team and may not have much in the way of making a mainstream, non mix tape song then it is hard to find a reasonable sounding song. Examples of this would be http://www.unsigned.com/1agetuas some of this artists song do not sound 'good' enough to make a music video that we are looking to do.

Explain the methods you used to attract your audience in your AS coursework.

Explain the methods you used to attract your audience in your AS coursework
In planning our coursework we had to consider these key areas, Mise-En-Scene, sound, camera and editing. However we also had to consider who our film would appeal to. To figure this out we looked for the typical age ranges that looked at trailers on YouTube and those age ranges who had reviewed the films on different websites. This allowed us to come to the conclusion that we should aim our film at 18-30 year olds. Also as a group we had thought of aiming towards university students as we knew this audience would enjoy high uses of editing techniques and camera work.
To add to this in our thriller opening we were planning on putting in black and white while only highlighting specific colours such as red. We thought this added a suspicious effect to our film. However this became impossible as we used more hand held camera work to aid the realism effect that we wanted. In doing this we were unable to highlight our specific colour which halted our plans, instead of this we increased and decreased the brightness in our scenes to add a binary opposite feel to the film such as good versus evil.
We also decided to increase our Mise en scene involvement to balance our lack of editing. In this we used realistic settings while keeping the clothing of our characters modern. In our killer scene we made sure that the body on the table was covered in fake blood, we did this to give the impression of violence as well as draw attention to the fact that this is our 'evil' character. This in addition attracted our male orientated audience.  With our use of sound we went for a high tempo, adrenaline soundtrack we thought this would attract to our young and male orientated audience while also giving the sense of time going quickly which is related to the mind of the killer.
With having a male orientated film we had to pull in our audience with realism. We found out through our research that our niche audience would be attracted more by realism than by flashy editing techniques. This also allowed us to focus on specific areas without having to worry about a mass market.
However with our film there were a few things we could of improved and put in. With the lack of our much wanted black and white editing technique I feel we lost out on an effect. This could of been remedied by more planning and research our technique and how we would need the camera to be. Also in our research and planning we could of done this more thoroughly by surveying more people as well as our key male age range. Also I feel that we did do a lot of researching in many more areas such as editing and due to time restrictions  we lost out on using these key features.

    Artists As texts

    Artists As Texts

The Reebok advert featuring 50 Cent glamorises violence in various ways by the use of sound, editing, camera angles and shots. The camera angles that are mainly used within the advert are close up shots and low angel shots. The low angel shots of 50 Cent signifies domination, superiority and power, whereas the close up shots mainly focus on the details of his expressions and his representation. In the advert we can clearly see 50 Cent's facial expressions which show no emotion showing that he has no fear or weakness.

Websites are a great viral way of showing an artist.  http://www.eminem.com/Default.aspx

Also articles provide an inside into the artist themselves. Articles can show artists in a positive or a negative light depending on the subject matter. However many articles are used to show the artists as being out of place or being too radical for some viewers. An example of this would be Rhianna's song"S&M".

    Artists as texts

    Artists as texts

Artists can be seen in a variety of texts for example:

    CD's such as

This front cover of "50 Cent" shows him instantly as standing out from the rest. The black background focusing the audiences eyes on the artists instead of any other factors. Also the use of the clothing used showing him wearing fighting gloves shows 50 cent as being strong and independent. Making him appeal to his target audience. Also the image of him topless with tattoos on his arms shows him as being tough, strong and dangerous. With his group logo being show on his hat and boxers (G unit) shows him as being well recognized and part of a gang, again showing him as dangerous.

    Music Videos such as

Her first single entitled Do it Like a Dude holds features found in the videos of some other female pop stars. These features include things like dirty ambiance, fashionable bisexuality and a bunch of female crotch grabbing which also shows aggression which is mostly a trait showed in male orientated videos. Also with using no men in the video this emphasizes Jesse J's independence from men and how women can do it by themselves or even 'like a dude'. Additionally the video shows variety and sticking it to men which is not commonly seen in mainstream videos.

    Indie rock conventions

    Indie rock conventions

Indie rock was born from more "independent" bands. Also the genre describes small and low budget labels with the bands have a doing it ourselves attitude and that the artists are involved in their music. Indie rock also use their 'Independence' to explore their 'sound' while exploring their bands subject and emotions so that they can appeal to more of a mainstream audience. Indie rock seems to be influences by many styles of music including punk, rock and country. This allows for the bands to claim a mass audience as they can appeal to many different genres of music audiences.

    Star theory

    Star theory

Dyer states that 'stars' are constructed, artificial images, even if they are represented as being "real people", experiencing real emotions.  It helps if their image contains a designed audience so that they can be copied to the interests of that audience. Their image may be made over a single item or characteristic e.g. Bono's 'Fly' sunglasses. Pop stars have the advantage over film stars in that their constructed image may be much more consistent over a period of time, and is not dependent on the films they choose as star vehicles.
Dyer proposes that "A star is an image not a real person that is constructed out of a range of materials".

    Digipak analysis

    Rhianna's digipak analysis

The font is serif and easy to read which allows the audience to focus on the artist.
The colour scheme is soft and a juxtaposition of the title 'Loud'. The soft theme of the cover fits in the the obscured face which adds mystery to the front cover.
The artist is looking straight into the camera drawing the attention of the audience.
The artists hair is covering one eyes which again adds mystery to the front cover.
Also the artists red hair contrasts the soft theme of the cover making her stand out and again drawing attention to her.

With the artist looking down this again shows mystery around her as well as allowing obscurity to occur around the artists.
The colour of the song titles complements the colour scheme of the album cover as a whole.
The use of the bar code and additionally information shows the record label and copyright information.

50 Cent's Get rich Or Die Tryin' Album cover showing broken glass looks likes a bullet hole implying to the audience that 50 Cent is dangerous as well as showing that he is still part of the 'hard life' with guns and drugs even though he is famous. Also the bullet hole could be referring to his shooting in 2000 in which he survived 9 shots and he uses this to brag that he is bulletproof. The album title links in to the artwork making it hidden away showing that the artist image is far more important. Also this may be done due to his presence being unheard of in the public eye even though he was involved with many hip hop disputes and launched mixtapes. The use of the bullet hole being on a piece of jewellery ties in with the elements of riches and death but it is also used as a focus point on the album cover. Which could be glorifying violence or showing it as a risk of getting rich.

The Reebok advert featuring 50 Cent glamorises violence in many ways by the use of sound, editing, camera angles and shots. The camera angles that are mainly used within the advert are close up shots and low angle shots. The low angle shots of 50 Cent signifies domination, superiority and power, whereas the close up shots mainly focus on the detail of expressions and his representation. In the advert we can see 50 Cent's facial expressions which show no emotion showing he has no fear or weaknesses. Also many shots show 50 Cent doing masculine activities such as press ups and punching a punching bag. This enhances the focus of his power by showing him as strong and determined. Also with having him topless shows his muscles which again makes him look strong and superior.

With 50 Cent in advertising for his products it gives him the ability to enhance his persona as well as making himself more recognizable and profitable. As well as advertising his brand G unit.
